Lazy, Techie, Gadget lover, Procrastinator, well behaved, Emotional, Environment friendly, animal lover, Internet freak, Formula-1 fanatic, Cricket lover, a Manchester United fan, and above all, an INDIAN. Well, that kind of sums me up as a new writer in Bob’s blog. I had never thought I would be writing out such posts when I started blogging back in November 2008. I had always thought I would be into something technical, something that would always involve my interest for Computers and gadgets.
My acquaintance with Bob can be categorized under “strange”. We do not know each other in person, no family terms, no business requirements. We met on a community site and I left out a message for Bob to visit my blog, TekBlogger. Bob visited me and asked me to “Pardon the Old man’s ignorance, but what is a full time Engineering course”. At once, I had known that Bob would be a good friend to be with. And so I am here, only ten sentences exchanged between Bob and me, and I am writing out a post for Bob. Bob, you are a wonderful man and I am loving this post more than my regular posts at my blog.
When I first visited the Old Barbershop, the first glance told me there was but not much for me in it. It was more about friends coming together and talking about something they did in the past or something they were doing in the present. But as and when I read some of the posts written by Bob and Carol (Pardon me, these are the two people I have read on Barbershop up top now), I realized that if I did not follow what I read there, I would be missing out on something I should know. It lets you feel so very confident when you read out what Bob has to offer by sharing his experiences.
Skipping the formalities, let me first introduce myself to the Barbershop. People around me call me Ashutosh Tiwari, (you can always call me Ashu), I am a native from India, and I love the Internet and Blogging. Though only a year since I have been into this beautiful pastime, I am loving it already. I am an engineering graduate (I know as I write out this post that I have already bored you people a lot and am still going on doing it, but you will excuse an engineer for being more boring, won’t you). My story about myself is kinda the same as is for most Indians, I was born in a Hindu family way back in November 1986. I was an excellent student all through my school (I guess up to class XII, after which I had my attention diverted to various other things but studies).
As soon as I completed School, I went to an engineering college to get my four years degree in Computer Science. (In India, when you are born, the path is laid down for you. When I was born, people already had started hoping that I would be a bright engineer and my parents will be proud of their son. Not only your parents, everybody else expects you to become something they want, I know it sounds embarrassing but still remains a fact). So, I completed my degree in 2009, i.e., this year June, and am back to my place with my dear Mom and dearest Dad. (I have a job with me but I think I will be joining the company only later this year or early the next year).
Completing all short and long introductions about myself with all words and phrases describing me as a person and telling very little about what I do or have done all my life (the long 23 years), I guess it would be harsh not to mention something about India and what I feel about it. When you talk about India, you are talking about a nation that accommodates almost all cultures that can exist on this earth. (Rule 377 of Indian Constitution was challenged by a decision by the judiciary in favor of Gays), so that presumably tells you we are now ready to change and accommodate almost everything on this planet. I have not been abroad (yet) and have no plans whatsoever, because I find the environment in India so complete. According to me, (though me still being very young to make such a call), I feel a person can live his life in two of the following ways: fast or slow. So if you are a person who wishes to slow down a bit while doing a lot of work, India has place for you. If you wish to rough yourself and push yourself to the limits in your area of expertise, India still has a place for you. We still follow all our relationships with so much of understanding that many will find difficult to digest. For instance, I still know the great grand children of the cousin of my great grand father and anything that happens in their family affects the people of my family. When you sit down to think of it, it may seem a bit odd and a bit useless, but in the end, its India you are talking about, we maintain what we have maintained!!
When you start visiting temples, you will find people offering more to the idols than they would have offered to a person who was in desperate need. It’s not because we don’t care, but because we have so much of faith in those stone idols.
We somehow still fear that if we don’t cater to the needs of those that are watching us (The Gods), no good can ever come to us. Pilgrims gathering in thousands and millions everyday on the banks of the holy Ganges; when you see them, you know, nobody can ever make them understand, their taking bath in the Ganges does not help them get better, but pollutes the river. But as I said, its India frenz!!
You won’t believe me when I tell you this; my grandfather won’t shave on Thursdays, why, because his father did not, and his father did not, and his father did not and so on….You can’t blame it on them, they have done it for so many years that they won’t understand. But yes, we follow it, not because it is right but because it pleases our elders and we respect and love them so much…
And yes, we care for each other a lot, even a beggar who seems quite fit in health is given proper food to eat and is given few bucks to buy his next meal. Does it not impress you that even begging can be a profession for about a million people in India? (According to stats, there are more than a million beggars in India who make their living sitting outside temples and mosques or going door to door). There can be no doubt whatsoever in the natural beauty that we have within our boundaries. The extreme north contains Kashmir which has no comparison I am told in terms of natural peace and beauty. I have been to every part of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and believe me, once you find a silent corner in the Himalayas, a perfect venture for snow and peace together, close your eyes and sit still, thinking nothing but about yourself, you will know why poets call Kashmir, the paradise on earth.
It seems I will never end up writing when I talk about India, so let me keep something for the next post. I will be visiting soon and will definitely have something for all the readers of Bob’s barbershop!!. It was fun writing out something for you Bob, and at such short notice, I could not think of something better. Cheers!!

"TheOldBarbershop" - created along the lines of the old barbershops, same but different, where folks would gather to visit with friends - share life experiences - tall tales - or maybe discuss politics, religion, sports, news, weather, current affairs or just about anything interesting or imaginable
We thought it might be good to tell folks a bit about the old barbershop, its history and its barbers ... somehow I got elected ... that's another way of saying that the Southern Jackass is a whole bunch bigger than me!Miss Carol says I'm an old rambling wreck from Georgia Tech ... and all four are true, but I ain't no engineer! It ain't by intent that I ramble but as you'll see, it takes me four pages to write what others do in less than one ... advance sincere apologies!
If you've read our story then

That's right, Plato's Place was a barbering school ... that's why some folks called it
Yes, I misuse and abuse this language I love ...
... after the '
Nobody knows what Jimmy really looks like, at least until now ... he can say more with a couple of words and a picture than most of us can in two or three pages ... you'll find proof positive on the walls of the Shop and his frequent comments!
There you'll also find his ward and our favorite columnist,
In the Shop, I talk a lot about mirrors and self-portraits ... the perception that others have is one thing, how we see ourselves is another. The notion of mirrors and self-portraits ... seemed rather easy to grasp ... but, when you try to grab hold of it, things just ain't as simple as they might seem, ... danged if some self-portraits aren't almost photographic in their reproduction while some mirrors give distorted renderings of reality. It's not enough to just use any old mirrors for reflection ... they must be of the right stuff and kind.
I talk a lot about things of which I know nothing too, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have anything to say ... it's another thing that differentiates SJA and JJS from most methinks ...
SJA's ability to reflect and look deep down inside ... and to be honest with himself ... is rare ... at least my experience has been that most either cannot or are unwilling to so do ... it is not just coincidence or happenstance that
Mother knew Polonius ... and agreed with him too ... though she would loan anyone in need anything she had, without expectation of it being returned, including money. Like Houseman's wisdom ... Mama's words weren't truly appreciated until long after they were received .. though they were the topic of frequent discussion ...
Being true to yourself ... knowing yourself .. the individual behind the many masks ... it's a rare gift, perhaps the rarest of all .. the trick methinks, is knowing how to use it ...
Knowing who and what we are ... recognizing our limitations ... shortcomings ... and weaknesses ... that's power that the majority of humanity does not possess. Unfortunately, those few so gifted frequently turn it into a liability rather than an asset. They allow the realization of their limitations ... shortcomings ... weaknesses ... and past failures or rejections to give them fear of failure rather than confidence in success as it should ... and when adversity is encountered, they see history repeating itself ... oftentimes giving up in frustration rather than defining and addressing the problems ...
Those who confuse self-portraits with mirrors admire themselves and blindly go forth with total confidence, for they believe they possess all the answers, usually surrounding themselves with non-threatening, kindred spirits ... they are the truly enlightened! ...
Say it ain't so Joe! ...
and if you can't think geometrically, that's okay ... the three of us can't cut hair neither, were it not for them bowls, but as you can see ... it was that or jail for Jimmy, SJA and me!
We've been truly blessed to add first
inspired ... and it's one thing that won't ... "

TheSouthernJackAss would like to welcome Ashu to the Shop, he is like a breath of fresh air ... I hope Ashu will decide to become a regular here, I'm interested in more of his thoughts and writings, and in getting to know him as a friend ... I hope those of you who visit the Shop will take time to read his posts, and please show your support and appreciation by submitting your comments ... it only takes a minute or so, and it's free! ...
Hey Ashu ... how delightful ... Great post!!
Can you believe that the Southern Jackass was awake in his stall and beat me to the punch ... extending a welcome to Ashu, "Our Man In India"
Hey Ashu, that's you!
With such a grand sense of humor and a style all his own ... you'd never guess that he's only 23.
He did a better job of telling what we're all about ... than we've been able to do in all this time, methinks!
Fantastic!
Ashu's like the Boss and Matthew ... writes a story faster than I can read one ...
Good nite folks!
sja and Bob, Its so very nice to get a welcome such as this on a blog that has no place for me with such great experienced thinkers as you..Just wanted to let you know, I have loved writing my first post for you and will regularly keep posting on your blog and will definitely appraise any comments from you. special mention: sja and Bob were up till 3 in the morning to make these comments..love u all
Wow! Love your post Ashu. Please keep them coming.
While I have had friends that were born in India, I have never had such a sense of your country before your post. It has to be the most interesting and diverse place on earth.
Most of what we know here about India comes from "The Jewel in the Crown", "A Passage to India", "Gandhi", "Bride and Prejudice", "Monsoon Wedding" and some National Geographic specials. That's a shame on us.
So a very sincere welcome to our family and hope to hear from you soon.
hmmmm . . . an indian engineer blogging here now and already making more sense than most. this ugandan journalist would like to welcome ashu to the haircuts and baseball blog. one thing noted,
"My acquaintance with Bob can be categorized under “strange”." -
ashu will fit right in, yes, fit right in.
ashu, there are some fine bloggers here from mechanicsville and from arkansas and from canada (a small seal) and jimmy smith is sure ashu will enjoy blogging with these bloggers and any others that may turnip off the truck (something like that, never could get it straight).
the sja is from a stall close by and journalist bob and carol reside in music city and sometimes play harmonicas on this blog. all in all, it is a happy group of bloggers and ashu is again welcomed.
Goodness ... look at the time ... slept Veteran's Day plum away!
I look forward to learning more about India and Indians. Carol is part Indian ... on both sides of her family, two different tribes ... Creek and Cherokee, methinks.
And Atlanta Braves' fans know about the Indians too ... or should! We're indebted to them for our only World Series Championship!
In 1973-4, I worked with a truly nice young man, Rajendra Shah ... Raj was a promising young architect. He now lives in Atlanta, methinks and a Braves' fan to boot!
Raj was a delight ... taught him to golf ... or tried more than once. I remember once, on a 155 yard par three ... hit my tee shot, landing maybe 15 feet from the pin ... he was well to the right, maybe 120 yards away.
I walked to green and marked my ball while he took the cart, one of the silent electric models.
Standing there on the green, lost in thought thinking about the next hole, a long, difficult doglegged par four ... I was surprised when Raj asked which club to use ... he was right next to me ... still in the cart!
During that same period, a young Indian girl named Barti took a job in my sister's interior design shop ... her husband Aniel, was a research engineer for Dupont.
They were and are nice folks too ... living now in New York, methinks. I don't know how it works in the Hindu religion or what they called it but Mama was "God Grandmother" to their kids ... always respectful but they called Mama "Mama" and their kids called her "Granny" too ... guess they were "almost kin folks"
like my friend Charlie Goodwin describes us!
It's a small world ... their oldest is a doctor ... he treated my sister earlier this year in an emergency situation ... she didn't recognize him at first.
"My acquaintance with Bob can be categorized under 'strange'" ... of that there can be Little doubt!!
Welcme to the Shop, Ashu! I'm the blog's resident prodigal, who gets fired up and is guns ablazing for a while, then gets sidetracked by life and doesn't come in for weeks at a time. It seems that between Bob, SJA, JJS, Carol, and now you that the Blog has five great writers worth reading. I'll have to stop in more often, and who knows, if sanity ever returns to the land of this preacher, maybe I'll get a piece together!
Prodigal, I've told Ashu all about you ... and the Boss keeps talking about some road being paved with good intentions ... Where are your danged recipes? ...!
More importantly, how are you and your tribe?
You got the number right, including you ... I ain't no writer, well, at least not worth reading! Carol was saying early this morning after reading Ashu's post ... how refreshing and enthusiastic like Matt!
Indeed, we've had another visitor from Arkansas ... The Arkansas Guru editor of ARRA.
We are honored that he featured SJA's Veteran's Day post from the Stall on his site and added us to his list of friends!
Here's a bit from our chat:
Bob: I saw that you visited The Old Barbershop ... hope you'll visit often, say howdy and comment too. We're pleased as punch ... honored, that SJA's piece is featured on ARRA!
OzarkGuru:
Most pleased to do so - also signed the petition for the D.C. WWI memorial. As a 22 year vet, I was disappointed to learn that the honor due our deceased grandparents was never rendered.
I exchange links - warning my sites are all conservative :) Dr. Bill (Ozark Guru)
Bob said:
Thanks Bill! Forewarned is forearmed. I would have never guessed! A danged conservative ... I was told that they were extinct! Labels mean little ... guess my "From Patriots to Politicians" post in our "Non-Political Politics" Special Feature positions me best ... more "sja" there too!
Nice Fellow, methinks!
Ashu ... just got up methinks ... should stop by shortly!
First of all, let me admit..I have not had a warmer welcome even when I posted a great great post at my blog which lasted on the top of google search results for quite sometime, and I have proofs, I recieve comments on almost every post that I write but none of them made me happier, to tell you guys the truth, as I am writing this comment, its only 9 a.m., here in India, and its been only 12 minutes to be exact since I woke up, and have not even washed my eyes but am reading all you guys in comments on this post; its so good to see the welcome I have recieved from all of you, and you bet, you will find me the active member of this Barbershop...Bob, SJA, JJS, Carol, and Matthews, know what, I just told my mom that I made new friends all over the world,(she smiles and thinks her son has gone mad), and am waiting for my Dad to come out of the bathroom and have coffee wid me,(I need to tell him, as he blogs too).7 comments in one day,is too much for me, I have never had such bloggers around me, thank you guys, thanks a ton
Goodness! Ashu, you are indeed a blessing ... say hi to your Mom from all of us ... your Dad too! Let him know that he'll be in our doghouse if he doesn't visit and say hi!
I haven't seen this much excitement and enthusiasm since my ol' pal Lamar Beefeater received a brand new red Western Flyer bicycle for Christmas, and a whole case of Beechnut chewing tobacco! ... Unbelievable! ...
Bob:
Jennifer has my dad's recipie for pork 'n' peppers, but we can't find it. If I don't find it by tomorrow, I'll call Dad and ask him for another copy. Also, he does a dish called tamale pie, which is fabulous! And if I am expected to be nice, I may share Mom's recipie for oatmeal candy (what most people call No-Bake cookies). The question is, can I find them?
And the paving on that road is rough, let me tell you...
Ashu, I really like your site, TekBlogger. While, I'm not technically savvy. I like how you offer explanations (in every day terms) of technical issues. Your writing is clear and easy to understand.
Keep up the good work.
TheSouthernJackAss has just published a new post in the Stall if you care to take a look ...
Ashu is a fine looking young man ... I just hope jimmy smith doesn't try to say Ashu's photograph is really that of jimmy smith ...
I sure hope that Ashu does some more of that fine writtin' ... and that ain't just jack squat!
I was just rereading this post ... there's so much there, you can't take it all in at once ... it's worth a second and yes, a third read!
Ashu likes crickets, English Crickets I think he said ... do they taste anything like grasshopper or locust?
In many places around the world, they're eaten as a good source of protein. In Mexico, they're eaten as snacks are used as filling for other foods ... they're even served on skewers in Chinese food markets.
Fish like them too!
However, make sure they're well cooked ... eaten raw, they can contain tapeworms.
Next thing you know, Ashu will be telling us that India is a as big as Texas!
this journalist is checking with a certain distant correspondent (beet writer) not heard from in a time, that was doing some free-lance work from home, and publishing here on occasion.
jimmy smith is trying to determine if there may be a great coincidence taking place on the haircuts and baseball blog, or if something is up . . . (wink, wink).
now, jimmy smith cannot be sure . . . but baby seal seems pretty sure and baby seal has always had good instincts.
reports of this journalist's investigative work will be made public on this blog at a later date. jimmy smith is searching for a phone number . . .
I remember back in the "good ol' days" when the esteemed sleuth/journalist jimmy smith and the fierce/despised sja unbelievably joined forces to push back an onslaught of deceit and deception on another blogoshperic front ... if jjs should require the assistance and cooperation of the sja ... it's there ...
Dang!
I remember them days too ... it's true that what comes around goes around ... or something like that ... that's what Mama said, anyways ... you boys keep me posted!
I'm a bit surprised not to have heard from Ashu but it may be my fault ... got tied up in the wee hours night before last and didn't get back to him as promised ...
I told him our most important rule is that folks ask when they don't understand ... he signed a written agreement to do that!!
It's truly a shame that others won't ...
However, I also told him that nobody understands what I write anyway, not even me, so I spend a lot of time asking myself questions ... he seemed to understand!
I told him too that I sometimes I just pretend to understand our Ugandan journalist from Cordele, Georgia who raises blue worms and cares for a talking baby seal.
There's a 12.5 hour difference in our time zones and my guess is that he's asleep ... maybe reading our tomfoolishness put him to sleep, as it sometimes does me.
No hot water again ... must call the folks what fix those things ... later
hmmm . . . phone disconnected. no forwarding address. something is definitely amiss.
coincidence, or not?
this is the work of journalist bob!
sja, all help will be appreciated. this journalist is going undercover.
"Stealth mode" ... I live for this! ...
Matthew has posted another fine piece in Thoughts From Centerfield ... take a look ...
Our hot water heater is like me going to the doctor ... never fails ... it worked fine for him, the fellow what fixed it ... only difference is that he still makes house calls, or in our case ... apartment calls.
I'll bet not many young folks know what house calls are ...it's but a distant memory for me!
It's what it sounds like ... the doctor came to our house when we were sick ... day or night, probably 'cause he liked Mama's cooking but he was always there when we needed him.
Do doctors make house calls in India?
"this is the work of journalist bob!" ... jimmy smith is a troublemaker methinks ... I don't work and he knows it!
I don't think he works either ... by his own admission, he asked sja for help, crawled back in bed and got under the covers!
Mercy!
Matt's having problems accessing the Shop from work ... unlike Jimmy and Bob, he's a hard worker with an honest job ... well, jobs ... he has several, methinks!
I think one of our widgets can't make it through his boss' firewall ... be asked me to add some pictures and I will ... but it's a good post and looks fine as is ... may update his sidebar too!
We'll git'er done ...
Hope everyone can sort through the latest Centerfield. For a history teacher who despises math, them's an awful lot of numbers!
Thanks to Bob for getting it posted!
Ashu-delighted to meet you and thanks for this overview of you and your native land. India is definitely a land of endless fascination. About a year ago I watched Louis Malle's extraordinary documentary "Phantom India" which documents the incredible richness and cultural diversity of your homeland. Hope to hear more from you in the future.
I heard something rummaging around in the backroom early this morning ... thought it might be a mouse ... some of my hard molasses candy was missing, along with a chunk of cheese ... then I remembered - jimmy smith had gone undercover ...
jimmy smith is now on the scene and there is no trace of b----ay.
a "bob" was calling here earlier. not sure if it was journalist bob but feelers are out.
undecover investigative journalism continues.
more later.
sent from this journalist's Blackberry
not even baby seal recognizes jimmy smith. results should come soon.
There's much to be done ... and much to be said for not saying too much but this Bob has been impaired if not felled by flu like symptoms ... goodness!
Hopefully, I'll be up and around again this evening ... until then I'm going back under the covers ... like Jimmy, only different!
Stay away from my candy!
very clever of journalist bob . . . but not entirely accepted by this investigative journalist. could be a distraction. probably so.
whither b----ay?
jimmysmiththinks b----ay has met with fowl play.
There's a new post up in the Stall ... but no b----ay sightings there as of yet ...
sometimes, too much a coincidence. sometimes, investigative reporting is demanded.
so far, this has been determined . . .
"b----ay" is believed to have been posting from a hot tub in nashville.
journalist bob is unavailable for questioning - reported to be in the bed and "under the covers".
baby seal has been instructed to mail journalist bob a poultice to combat journalist bob's "flu like symptoms".
perhaps a poultice will loosen the tongue as well as that a jimmy smith poultice normally loosens.
jimmy smith will remain undercover for now as this investigation continues.
The jackass has also switched to invisible mode until some answers are given ...
"bob, journalist is genuine. picks bob journalist's friends, and is true to the friendship." ... another one of them mind triggered things ...
I'm plum tuckered ...
Sorry Folks, was out of station for a while and the plan wa svery sudden..found no means of getting to a laptop connected to internet..and when I did, I think Bob would have been fast asleep...I see there is some discussion going around here that Im unable to understand..I knw You all will forgiv a dumbass like me for being so unclever..but it is the way I am..and I follow the rule of asking you all, what are you all talking about??? If it pleases you all, I will like to be part of the Old Barbershop!!!
Sorry again for my sudden absence!!
Ashu, we don't even know what we are talking about ... but you already are a part of TheOldBarbershop ...
And always remember, anytime you talk to Bob -- he is asleep! ...
That was some info..SJA..thnks for telling me that
Welcome home Ashu!
Bob never sleeps!
Well, sometimes I do but a few people have commented that they think don't think I do! SJA, Jimmy, Carol and Matt think that I'm always asleep.
I think Jimmy Smith(JJS) said it best ... "ashu will fit right in, yes, fit right in" ... translated into English, that just means that we all like you and know you'll be a good addition ... "Our Man in India"
"I know you all will forgive a dumbass like me for being so unclever ... but it is the way I am ... while it's true that we have some mules here in the shop, none are dumb, weird maybe!
Indeed you do have a style all its own, as do we all ... but one thing it is not ... it most certainly is not unclever!
