"TheOldBarbershop" - created along the lines of the old barbershops, same but different, where folks would gather to visit with friends - share life experiences - tall tales - or maybe discuss politics, religion, sports, news, weather, current affairs or just about anything interesting or imaginable
We thought it might be good to tell folks a bit about the old barbershop, its history and its barbers ... somehow I got elected ... that's another way of saying that the Southern Jackass is a whole bunch bigger than me!Miss Carol says I'm an old rambling wreck from Georgia Tech ... and all four are true, but I ain't no engineer! It ain't by intent that I ramble but as you'll see, it takes me four pages to write what others do in less than one ... advance sincere apologies!
If you've read our story then

That's right, Plato's Place was a barbering school ... that's why some folks called it
Yes, I misuse and abuse this language I love ...

Nobody knows what Jimmy really looks like, at least until now ... he can say more with a couple of words and a picture than most of us can in two or three pages ... you'll find proof positive on the walls of the Shop and his frequent comments!
There you'll also find his ward and our favorite columnist,
In the Shop, I talk a lot about mirrors and self-portraits ... the perception that others have is one thing, how we see ourselves is another. The notion of mirrors and self-portraits ... seemed rather easy to grasp ... but, when you try to grab hold of it, things just ain't as simple as they might seem, ... danged if some self-portraits aren't almost photographic in their reproduction while some mirrors give distorted renderings of reality. It's not enough to just use any old mirrors for reflection ... they must be of the right stuff and kind.
I talk a lot about things of which I know nothing too, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have anything to say ... it's another thing that differentiates SJA and JJS from most methinks ...
SJA's ability to reflect and look deep down inside ... and to be honest with himself ... is rare ... at least my experience has been that most either cannot or are unwilling to so do ... it is not just coincidence or happenstance that
Mother knew Polonius ... and agreed with him too ... though she would loan anyone in need anything she had, without expectation of it being returned, including money. Like Houseman's wisdom ... Mama's words weren't truly appreciated until long after they were received .. though they were the topic of frequent discussion ...
Being true to yourself ... knowing yourself .. the individual behind the many masks ... it's a rare gift, perhaps the rarest of all .. the trick methinks, is knowing how to use it ...
Knowing who and what we are ... recognizing our limitations ... shortcomings ... and weaknesses ... that's power that the majority of humanity does not possess. Unfortunately, those few so gifted frequently turn it into a liability rather than an asset. They allow the realization of their limitations ... shortcomings ... weaknesses ... and past failures or rejections to give them fear of failure rather than confidence in success as it should ... and when adversity is encountered, they see history repeating itself ... oftentimes giving up in frustration rather than defining and addressing the problems ...
Those who confuse self-portraits with mirrors admire themselves and blindly go forth with total confidence, for they believe they possess all the answers, usually surrounding themselves with non-threatening, kindred spirits ... they are the truly enlightened! ...
Say it ain't so Joe! ...
and if you can't think geometrically, that's okay ... the three of us can't cut hair neither, were it not for them bowls, but as you can see ... it was that or jail for Jimmy, SJA and me!
We've been truly blessed to add first
inspired ... and it's one thing that won't ... "

Sounds like a great recipe ... you could make a lot with that 1725 pound pumpkin that little girl had up in Ohio!
'tis the season for great family recipes ... lost all of mine in a fire this summer ... been storing a house full of furniture for 15 years, all lost, including Mama's recipes!
I do remember the one for candy and will be adding it to the Barbershop Cookbook sometime today!
I hope Jimmy, Matt, Miss Rosa, Gill and all who visit will join in and submit their favorites so that they can be added too!
To make it easy, you can just email me the recipes, together with any suggested or desired pictures ... and I'll gitter done!
Maybe a pie from Letwan's Mama?
I can't compete with the Boss when it comes to pictures ... he's the world's best at finding the very best ones ... and they're always appropriate for the purpose at hand!
Be that as it may ... me Mama's Chocolate Fudge recipe has been added to the Cookbook ... and I guess it's sorta mine too since I've been using it, off and on, since 1964.
I saw one kinda like it, ingredient wise, online but they used 4 tablespoons of butter ... goodness, I can't imagine ... their preparation was different ... too complicated for me!
Mama used to say ... "I suwannee, if you can't get into the spirit of things, you need to go on a diet!"
I humbly suggest that them are more than just words strung together ...
Mama was right ... she most always was ... she taught me that can't never could and took that word out of my vocabulary!
My guess is that you can too ... that is, it's a matter of desire rather than ability. If you don't desire to get in the spirit of things ... it's okay, and we'll understand if you don't!
Indeed, we wouldn't understand if you didn't desire to get in spirit of things but you did anyway ... not sure how you'd go about doing that anyways but it'd sure be a tough row to hoe, methinks!
However, if you do desire to get in the spirit of things but don't ... I suwannee ... dang!
Well, we hope you will if you do ... and won't if you don't
No, getting into the spirit of things isn't for everybody ... those who use self portraits for mirrors just can't seem to do it, no matter how hard they try.
Getting into the spirit of things ain't a seasonal thing neither but this is the perfect time to give it a try ... no time better!
We won't mock you or make fun ...
Any questions?
My mama had a way with words ... "if you don't mind me, I'll jerk a knot in you" ... she'd do it too, all 5' 2" and 98 pounds! Mama never needed no diet!
Sounds and looks delicious. All we used to do with pumpkins was bake the seeds of the Jack-O-Lantern and use pumpkin pie mix to make pumpkin pies.
I'll be posting "Grandma's Vegetable Soup" receipe as soon as I can come up with some measurements. In my family, you just make the soup -- no measuring.
Well, I just posted Miss Carol's recipe that she got from her grandmother who got it from her grandmother and while Miss Carol's still young ... that's recipe's older than me!
If you're looking for it, it's now featured in the Barbershop Cookbook Feature ... one click access from the Special Feature Menu in the Shop!
She could have posted it herself like she said, but she emailed it to me so test the system ...
No problems!!
You can do it too ... no excuses ... just email your recipes, including any pictures and instructions ... to bob.oldbarbershop@gmail.com
I'll do the rest!!
I'm told that we're having soup tomorrow ... cornbread too!
cassava pudding by journalist jimmy smith . . .
cassava is a root vegetable and has dark-brown hairy skin. It is peeled, cut and boiled for twenty minutes. sometimes the root is dried in the sun and pounded into flour. the root consists almost entirely of starch with less than 1% protein. add a couple bird eggs and stir until pudding consistency. delicious cassava pudding is a delicacy. this journalist can almost taste it now.
perhaps fbg will offer a holiday recipe, journalist bob. wonder if fbg still has the cookie gun?
diane lane may offer a pudding recipe. baby seal sent a request earlier.
Thanks Jimmy!
Indeed, cassava pudding can be really good ... grated cassava, coconut milk, sugar and eggs ... thought I had a recipe but can't find it.
Like beauty, the recipes are probably as many as there are beholders ... email your favorite to me and I'll include it in the Cookbook!!
A really good Tapioca recipe would be nice to add too!
"perhaps fbg will offer a holiday recipe" ... that would be nice ... I had hoped that she might visit after responding to my earlier email but unfortunately we haven't heard back.
As a matter of coincidence, I emailed her yesterday about an old recipe I found ... maybe she'll respond!
Hope Baby Seal has good luck!!
bloggers that want a cassava root please send jimmy smith a stamped, self addressed cassava root canister.
Is there a substitute for cassava roo

Japanese fishing trawler sunk by giant jellyfish
A 10-ton fishing boat has been sunk by gigantic jellyfish off eastern Japan.

"The 10-ton Diasan Shinsho-maru went down in the waters off Japan while trying to haul a net containing dozens of gigantic gelatinous Nomura’s jellyfish, which can reach up to 6 feet 7 inches in diameter and weigh up to 440 pounds."
"The load of jellyfish was so heavy, it caused the fishing trawler to sink, throwing the three-man crew into the sea despite clear skies and calm waters. Another trawler rescued the flailing crew. Crackers were given to everyone and several of the big jellyfish were consumed right there."

I read one story line that said ... some scientists believe it possible that the increased giant jelly fish presence in Japanese waters might be partially the result of diminished numbers of its natural predators in that area.
And well it might ...
Presented with such a bold, profound and definitive observation, I am move to say that there's nothing quite like the scientific method ... perhaps because it's some different from all the rest.
Where is Hugh Lofting when you need him? Certainly he would know ... and if he didn't, he would quickly find out from his doctor, methinks.
That was to say ... "I am moved to say that there's nothing quite like the scientific method ... perhaps because it's somewhat different from all the rest" ... I think senility may well be a blessing conferred upon some to spare them the pain and embarrassment associated with growing old.
Were it not for spell checker and the on line dictionaries, I would need to resort to using four letter words to communicate ... at least think then, folks would think me young!
One nice thing ... as you become more forgetful, you don't remember as many of the embarrassing things you've done ...
"Ga. Aquarium loses third beluga whale ... them's big suckers ... hard to lose one, much less three ... somebody needs to keep an eye on them.
If they're found walking around downtown, it'd be a whale of a story ... stay on top of it!
In case anyone missed it ... I want to thank ask cherlock for the visit ... thanks too for adding us to your blogroll!
And, thanks three for your comment on the "Commentary by Jack Squat" and methinks you voted in the associated polls too!
The comment? Go look for yourself!
No, Mama said to be nice ... "The best place for those who commit these crimes is in the hottest places of hell. People who do harm to children are the worst, by far. Laws don't seem able to protect them and those laws are already in place. What makes anyone think "hate" crimes will ever be stopped"?
Wasn't that one of our poll choices? Dang!
For some reason, I think most thought the commentary was about one thing when it was about another ... "cherlock" got it right!
I ain't used to thinking or thanking so much ... but thanks were in order, methinks.

I am talking with Mama about publishing one of her recipes but Mama doesn't usually share any of that. Maybe I can get you a pie, though. Mama makes the best pies around and one of her pies has been nominated for the Nobel Peach Prize.

I almost forgot ... was talking recipes to FBG who sends her regards to all ... and especially Jimmy ... "I miss jimmy. Please tell him hello from me & that he can feel free to email. I don't have an address for him so I haven't spoken to him in quite some time"

Something has been bothering me and I feel compelled to ask the question . . .
"(Do not prebake as with the larger pumpkin.)"
Why not?
What would a little pre-baking hurt?
Pre-baking? ... well you wouldn't want to traumatize those little pumpkins anymore than they've already had to endure ... would you? ...
Once, I pre-baked some pudding and it turned out badly and I lost Jimmy Smith. He was the love of my life but I failed in the pudding category. Alas, I lost him.
<Carol said she had posted something ... thought it was a comment ...
I see it's a new post ... dang!!
It pays to refresh, now and again!!
