According to most historical records, the first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, to commemorate the bountiful autumn harvest gathered by the Plymouth Colony after an extremely harsh winter ... in that same year, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving ... the colonists celebrated this day as a traditional English feast, to which they invited the local Wampanoag Indians ... days of thanksgiving were celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. All thirteen colonies did not, however, observe Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. George Washington was the first president to declare the holiday, in 1789 ...
We are all familiar with the Thanksgiving holiday as a time for family, feasts, football and parades. All of these are great American institutions, but we forget too easily the meaning of this national holiday as it was first established by President George Washington on October 3, 1789, and reaffirmed as we know it today by President Abraham Lincoln on October 3, 1863, exactly 74 years later. A mere glance at their Thanksgiving proclamations reminds us of the noblest purposes of government ... moreover, the simplest meaning of Thanksgiving reminds us--contrary to secularist courts and professors--that these presidents were proclaiming a holy day, a day for prayer and recognition of Almighty God's authority over man ... a day for acknowledgment of our many transgressions ... a day of praise and thanksgiving to our Creator for His gracious gifts of mercy, forgiveness and abundance of blessings toward all mankind ... please read carefully President Lincoln's following proclamation, for within this historic text lies the true essence of Thanksgiving ...
Washington, D.C.
October 3, 1863
By the President of the United States of America.
A Proclamation.
The year that is drawing towards it's close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of such extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foriegn lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hands to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eight.
By the President: Abraham Lincoln
William H. Seward,
Secretary of State
The above is the proclamation which set the precedent for America's national day of Thanksgiving. During his administration, President Lincoln issued many orders such as this. For example, on November 28, 1861, he ordered government departments closed for a local day of thanksgiving.
Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent magazine editor, wrote a letter to Lincoln in 1863, urging him to have the "day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union festival." She wrote, "You may have observed that, for some years past, there has been an increasing interest felt in our land to have the Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the States; it now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution." This document sets apart the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise."
According to an April 1, 1864, letter from John Nicolay, one of President Lincoln's secretaries, this document was written by Secretary of State William Seward, and the original was in his handwriting. On October 3, 1863, fellow Cabinet member Gideon Welles recorded in his diary that he complimented Seward on his work. A year later the manuscript was sold to benefit Union troops.

I wholeheartedly agree with the spirit and essence of President Lincoln's proclamation ...

"TheOldBarbershop" - created along the lines of the old barbershops, same but different, where folks would gather to visit with friends - share life experiences - tall tales - or maybe discuss politics, religion, sports, news, weather, current affairs or just about anything interesting or imaginable
We thought it might be good to tell folks a bit about the old barbershop, its history and its barbers ... somehow I got elected ... that's another way of saying that the Southern Jackass is a whole bunch bigger than me!Miss Carol says I'm an old rambling wreck from Georgia Tech ... and all four are true, but I ain't no engineer! It ain't by intent that I ramble but as you'll see, it takes me four pages to write what others do in less than one ... advance sincere apologies!
If you've read our story then

That's right, Plato's Place was a barbering school ... that's why some folks called it
Yes, I misuse and abuse this language I love ...

Nobody knows what Jimmy really looks like, at least until now ... he can say more with a couple of words and a picture than most of us can in two or three pages ... you'll find proof positive on the walls of the Shop and his frequent comments!
There you'll also find his ward and our favorite columnist,
In the Shop, I talk a lot about mirrors and self-portraits ... the perception that others have is one thing, how we see ourselves is another. The notion of mirrors and self-portraits ... seemed rather easy to grasp ... but, when you try to grab hold of it, things just ain't as simple as they might seem, ... danged if some self-portraits aren't almost photographic in their reproduction while some mirrors give distorted renderings of reality. It's not enough to just use any old mirrors for reflection ... they must be of the right stuff and kind.
I talk a lot about things of which I know nothing too, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have anything to say ... it's another thing that differentiates SJA and JJS from most methinks ...
SJA's ability to reflect and look deep down inside ... and to be honest with himself ... is rare ... at least my experience has been that most either cannot or are unwilling to so do ... it is not just coincidence or happenstance that
Mother knew Polonius ... and agreed with him too ... though she would loan anyone in need anything she had, without expectation of it being returned, including money. Like Houseman's wisdom ... Mama's words weren't truly appreciated until long after they were received .. though they were the topic of frequent discussion ...
Being true to yourself ... knowing yourself .. the individual behind the many masks ... it's a rare gift, perhaps the rarest of all .. the trick methinks, is knowing how to use it ...
Knowing who and what we are ... recognizing our limitations ... shortcomings ... and weaknesses ... that's power that the majority of humanity does not possess. Unfortunately, those few so gifted frequently turn it into a liability rather than an asset. They allow the realization of their limitations ... shortcomings ... weaknesses ... and past failures or rejections to give them fear of failure rather than confidence in success as it should ... and when adversity is encountered, they see history repeating itself ... oftentimes giving up in frustration rather than defining and addressing the problems ...
Those who confuse self-portraits with mirrors admire themselves and blindly go forth with total confidence, for they believe they possess all the answers, usually surrounding themselves with non-threatening, kindred spirits ... they are the truly enlightened! ...
Say it ain't so Joe! ...
and if you can't think geometrically, that's okay ... the three of us can't cut hair neither, were it not for them bowls, but as you can see ... it was that or jail for Jimmy, SJA and me!
We've been truly blessed to add first

Scooped again!!
I just posted a "Thanksgiving" comment to the previous post ... started earlier in the day but I encountered computer problems and just now posted ... only to find that I was a day late and a dollar short ...
I'm gonna quit saying how good your stuff is ... you just keep getting better and better ...
Still haven't topped your very first ... Daydreaming is my favorite, probably always will be ... but, ain't nothing short about none of them!
Well said, well said indeed!
Lincoln's Proclamation is remarkable when you consider the setting, methinks
Well done Boss!
Great post chief....
And for those lazies who won't look it up ... GW's
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor ...
and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be ...
That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks ...
for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation ...
for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war ...
for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed ...
for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted ...
for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions ...
to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually ... to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed ...
to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us ...
and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
If you read it on the previous blog, tough ..I moved it!

And so should we all ...
I too was using Google to look some things up ... no, not toes
American Thanksgiving ... and one of the things to which I was led contained "In celebrations at home, it is a holiday tradition in many families to begin the Thanksgiving dinner by saying grace" ...
Well, the first time I was asked to "say the prayer" at the dinner table ... young and nervous, I started "Now I lay me down to sleep ... "
Since then, I've sometimes prayed a silent prayer ... "not to be called upon to say the prayer".
I well remember another silent prayer ... grace at one of Nashville's finest ... as I was so doing, the maître d'hôtel asked Carol ... "is he sick or asleep?"
What is thanksgiving ... A bunch of settlers and Indians enjoyed a good meal together following the harvest ... big deal ...
It was a big deal, the biggest!
They were celebrating and giving thanks for having survived a brutal winter and enjoying a good harvest ... their own industry, the help of the Indians, and the enabling hand of God ... a lot for which to be thankful.
Man, it was amaizin' ... they had turkey and cornbread too ...
Susan Thrush could learn from this ... there were no designated hitters, except perhaps John Alden, and the economy was good ... they had an international feast, for goodness sakes ... everybody shared in the bounty and nobody complained about the prices ... water was free and cokes were two for a nickel.
We bought Long Island for $24 ... the dollar was sound back then ... I just paid $32 for a turkey.
What is thanksgiving? ... take your choice ...
The act of giving thanks
An expression of gratitude especially to God
A public acknowledgment or celebration of divine goodness
Back to the mind trigger ... "it is a holiday tradition in many families to begin the Thanksgiving dinner by saying grace" ... and in the same piece, ... "an estimated 64% of Americans say grace".
That means that an estimated 36% don't ... I can't imagine any family sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner without giving thanks.
When we examine the quagmire in we find ourselves, it's interesting to reflect on the past ...
While all of our founding fathers were not Christian, I'll bet that grace was routinely said at more than 64% of their dinner tables ... more interestingly, 100% of our state constitutions acknowledge and pay homage to God, or so is it my understanding.
It's true that those who have lost their freedoms cherish them more that those who have not ... those who have been poor appreciate wealth more than those who have not ... those who have failed appreciate success more than those who have not ... and those in poor health ...
Those who think and feel themselves self-sufficient cannot be expected to understand thanksgiving, or engage therein.
It's not the best of ideas to wait until you're hopelessly lost to ask for direction ... Carol McBrayer
Thanksgiving is of especial importance to Carol and me ... in addition to our 28 November Anniversary, we have many reasons to be thankful and they include each of you ... not just once a year but every day!
Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!!
journalist was touched by the thanksgiving post from sja.
jimmy smith was reminded of the wampanoag indians' famous contribution to the first thanksgiving dinner . . . corn.
that's right corn . . . a topic from the previous blog. it only goes to show that there are strange coincidences in blogging - the mention of corn in two very different blog entries.
corn, or maize as gil would say.
corn from the wampanoag indians. beans, too, but there has been no bean blogging going on here in some time. could blog beans, but mostly this is a haircut and baseball blog and not a bean blog.
nothing wrong with blogging beans, just doesn't happen that much. great northern beans, butter beans . . . wait! journalist seems to remember rosalynn blogging butterbeans in the previous blog. yes! it is so.
eureka! back to back blogs with corn and beans. nary a word about mince meat, though.
little known that the wampanoag indians also cooked the first mince meat pie. lots of mince running around back then.
and wasn't pie discussed in the previous blog as well? oh, the humanity! this is getting out of control!
corn, beans, pie . . . jimmy smith is thinking thanksgiving dinner already. must have some turkey and some dressing. wait! wasn't obama discussed in that last blog and how michelle is dressing? whoa! blogging coincidence or mysterious hapenings?
bloggers should ponder and let jimmy smith know what bloggers think.
Now Jimmy, it seems to me that a turkey or two were mentioned, but they shall go nameless ... also think Gill mentioned bean pie ... covering two bases ... no rbi ... but perhaps some positive contagion.
Blogging coincidence or mysterious hapenings?
I'll never tell
A Maize Thing coincidences.... No mention of the white man's most important contribution to the festivities.. That golden liquid which sustained those pilgrims and helped them maintain their courage in the face of adversity. Yes, beer... not that of the root but a dash of the hairless dog (as mentioned on a previous post) which bit them. Yes, even then the pilgrims knew of the importance of beer goggles.... A beet writer's secret weapon...
But that is a topic for another day..
But enough of the levity... Thanks to the SJA and to Bob to remind us of the real purpose of Thanksgiving. We all have much to be thankful for, we live in the greatest country in the world. Where failure is no longer an option... (Sorry, back to the topic)
No, we still have a roof over our heads and for at least one day of the year, we shall eat to excess. When memories will be created for the grandchildren so in twenty or so years, they will look back as this time being the good old days.
Boy, that's a scary thought...
Sorry, sometimes it's hard for me to not to mince words, a slice of humble pie for me, I guess I'll just tip toe quietly back to the recesses of my mind....
This is Bob's other half, Carol.
Another exceptional post. And a much needed topic, Thanksgiving ... to give thanks for what we have. And to remember the past Thanksgivings. And to hope for the future Thanksgivings to come.
Welcome Abigail to what I pray will be many, many happy Thanksgivings with your family.

Michelin-ranked restaurant says sorry on beans
Tue Nov 25, 11:09 am ET
TOKYO (Reuters) – A Japanese restaurant awarded the Michelin restaurant guide's coveted three-star rank apologized on Tuesday for selling jars of beans containing bacteria that could cause food poisoning.
The black beans were sold under the name of the Kagurazaka Ishikawa restaurant, known for its dishes of seasonal fish and meat.
The beans, which went on sale at a Takashimaya department store in Tokyo, were found to contain Bacillus Cereus bacteria that could cause vomiting or diarrhea, said Nana Okada, a spokeswoman at Takashimaya Co.
The beans, which were made at a factory in central Japan under the guidance of the three-star restaurant in Tokyo, were possibly not heated sufficiently to be disinfected, Okada said.
"We are so sorry for the trouble," Hideki Ishikawa, the owner and chef of the restaurant, told Reuters.
journalist commentary:
jimmy smith notices that these were "factory made" beans. journalist would never eat factory made beans and jimmy smith would encourage bloggers not to do so.
no factory made beans on thanksgiving day.
And are bean counters and bean makers one in the same? And who spilled the beans on Kagurazaka Ishikawa? And why do the sell only black beans? Are they biased?
And is that why the Japanese pitchers seem inclined to sign with Boston? Safe beans?
I still recommend the bean pie.. Just make sure to use home grown beans.... Then again, maybe I don't know beans about pies...
And of course there is cheese cake vs bean pie... Should one be extra cautious about cutting the cheesecake after eating bean pie? Could be a real fax pas at the dinner table....
Weird Science Part Dux
TOKYO - Handlers of a popular polar bear, brought to mate with a female in a zoo in northern Japan, found their breeding plan was doomed when they noticed that he, in fact, was a she.
Tsuyoshi, a four-year-old, 441 lb cream-colored polar bear, had been living in harmony with a female polar bear since June, the two often playing together, Masako Inoue, a zookeeper at the Kushiro Municipal Zoo, said on Wednesday.
"We thought he was a male, so we never had any doubts as we took care of him," she said.
Story continues below ↓advertisement | your ad here
"But one day we realized that the two bears urinate in the same way, and we thought, is that how males do it? And once we started to look at things that way, we weren't quite so sure."
After two DNA examinations of Tsuyoshi's hair and a manual exam, the Kushiro Municipal Zoo found Tsuyoshi to be a female.
"We do have mixed feelings," said Inoue.
"But because Tsuyoshi was supposed to be a male, she came here, and because she came here, we were able to take care of her since she was very small."
It is not uncommon for the sex of polar bears to be misread, Inoue said, as their long hair makes it difficult to distinguish, especially when the bears are young. Tsuyoshi was pegged as a male three months after birth, Inoue said.
The Kushiro Municipal Zoo will talk with other zoos in the area to see what to do about their breeding plan, she added.
Methinks they may have received their training at the San Francisco Zoo....
Just stopped by to wish all a very safe and 'Happy Thanksgiving' ... may your hair grow thick and long ...
Also a very special 'Happy Anniversary' to my extra special friends, the ever gracious Carol and Bob ... may you be blessed with many more ... and your candy jar e'er full ...
So let me get this straight, Citigroup will be paying the New York Mets $400 million over the next 20 years in order to hang their name on the new Mets stadium(Citi Field), which has already been subsidized by federal dollars--our dollars ...
This week, Citigroup was handed $306 BILLION in federal government bailout money--our money ... at the same time announcing the layoff of 53,000 Citigroup employees ...
Does anyone other than me see anything wrong with this picture? ... that entire bunch of air-headed crooks in Washington, D.C. should be arrested for treason, then jailed ...
But don't worry Mets ... you'll get your $400 million ... and the fleecing of America continues ...
They should name that new ballpark "American Taxpayer's Field" ... Unbelievable! ...
Does anyone else besides me see this as a bail out of New York city?
Not treason, just old fashion fraud...
Happy Thanksgiving to all the Barbershop patrons. And thanks to the Boss and Bob for posting all the historical information. I love it when people go straight the the sources of history, instead of making up whatever "history" sounds good or politically correct. Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving, from Jennifer, Walter, Abigail, and this Dad to Walter and Abigail!
Gil, I directionally agree with the Boss ... unfortunately, he was only talking about the airheads who were crooks ...
Some airheads are crooks, but almost by definition, they are dupes; ... duped by the truly treasonous ones
The last time I looked, treason was defined as the betrayal of a trust ... zealots were defined as fanatical partisans
Zeal and passion top the list of good ... but zealots are oft times flawed and dangerous ... for they are closed minded and the only truth is theirs ...
The worst among these are the latter generation zealots who expound that to which they're partisan, without the understanding of the initiating generation ... the farther removed the generation, the worse it is, or so me thinks.
Some know that among liquors, good scotch whiskey is my preference, ... especially Royal Salute, the 21 year old big brother of Chivas Regal ... Chivas is indeed good scotch, introduced to me by my doctor who "prescribed" a very light "Chivas and Water" to combat a hyperactive vagus nerve ... but Royal Salute became my drink of choice and remember once buying a case in the mid 1960s, ... though it's a good thing I very rarely drink for I could no longer afford one shot of Chivas were I to now so choose.
Drink is a misnomer ... Royal Salute is to be sipped ... and most of it was given away as gifts ... though I sometimes did drink a light Chivas and water, when I drank, it was usually beer.
Almost always described as smooth, Royal Salute had a distinctive aroma and taste all its own, methinks ... I liked both its smoothness and taste ... I could sip on one snifter all night, stay sober as a judge ... never have a hangover ... and most importantly, it calmed my stomach too.
In those days, parties in my home were not uncommon ... and we had what I would consider a well stocked, serve yourself bar ... featuring a magnum of Chivas Regal ... though I usually sipped the Royal Salute.
Those friends of long standing who have read my comments know the story ...
After each party, it seemed the Royal Salute was always gone while the Chivas went almost untouched ... my friends all extolled the Royal Salute, especially its smoothness and distinctive taste!!
Indeed they were zealots ... what would last me all night would be consumed by them in a gulp or two, or so it seemed.
I didn't really mind ... that was 40 years ago ... but, having not exactly fallen off the turnip truck yesterday, I didn't buy it either ...
Well, I did buy the scotch ... and before one party, I bought and filled two distinctive Royal Salute "bottles" with "Cutty Sark" ... the whiskey, not the ship ...
After the party, one Royal Salute bottle was empty and about one third of the other was gone ... and again, the Chivas virtually untouched ... and as always, my friends all extolled the Royal Salute, especially its smoothness and distinctive taste!!
Those friends weren't exactly airheads ... mostly neighbors and coworkers ... one owned a radio station and another was an actuary who later became president of the company for which we worked ...
Nor were they crooks ... guilty of treason, maybe ...
Murder is usually considered the worst of crimes ... and I oppose murder with a passion ... but the intentional betrayal of a sacred trust, with evil or self-serving intent, is perhaps deserving of equal or greater recognition.
We must be ever careful of zealots, especially latter generation ones ...
The zealot test ... ask a question to which they don't know the answer ... or to which there is no singular answer.
Most of those in Washington are indeed guilty of trust betrayal ... were it not so, we would not find ourselves in the shape we do ... unfortunately, they are mostly latter generation zealots who understand not their duty, their responsibilities, nor that with they have been entrusted ... or perhaps that's fortunate
Impassioned airheads ... latter generation zealots ... yes, on both sides of the isle, methinks
Now we're about to see a new breed, methinks ... "Obama Zealots" ... zeal for the unknown ...
and into the valley of death rode the 600 ...
Or is it 300 million?
Happy Thanksgiving!
Prayers are for Barbara Bush and her rapid, complete recovery!
Bob, too many points were made and I shall not argue a single one... However, you confirmed one of my observations with your blind taste test. Far too many folks equate value with price. Far too many again value something because others tell them it's valuable. A natural diamond is no more beautiful than a cubic zerconia but we are told one id]s much more valuable. Is the oil pump today really worth one hundred dollars less than is was 6 months ago or have the jackals been exposed?
People thought their houses were worth much more because the unscrupulousness money changers were gaming the system.
Now we are being told credit has dried up. Well, not hardly from what I can see, I am still getting swamped with credit card offers and appeals for me to throw my money away on many things I do not need. The banks and credit unions in our area are begging people to borrow money to buy cars.
The only thing that has really happened is the federal government has made the money I already have less valuable. I expect it will be worthless in short order but I shall not fret. I will just go on the public dole like everyone else. The government seems so intent on socialism I may as well submit to their pressures, the currency I have will be worthless anyway...
But in the meantime, I will continue to promote self reliance, small government,no spend beyond my means and help my neighbors. In addition to my regular jobs, I had multiples, I still managed to volunteer for my local rescue squad for 42 years until my knees no longer allowed me to do it. I logged over 30,000 volunteer hours and I do not regret a moment of it. I thought it my civic duty.
But I will celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow with 17 members of my family, so I have much to be thankful for.
n addition, I am thankful for all of the acquaintances I have made through the various blogs and if any of you ever travel through my neck of the woods I want y'all to know I would be thankful to have you stop by a share a biscuit or two or even a libation.
So Happy Thanks Giving everyone....
I believe I listened to those "Big 3" CEO's testifying before Congress that there is no money available as credit for folks to purchase their respective automobiles, thus poor sales, thus their potential failure, thus they require a government handout to remain in operation ... but, I have also watched numerous commercials over the last several days in which GM has been proclaiming that there are HUNDREDS of lending institutions eagerly waiting with MILLIONS of dollars available for GM automobile loans ...
So which is it? ...
scotch, biscuits, car loans . . . this blog is different. no pie. no turkey. no dressing. no, none of these. today is thanksgiving. pilgrims. and who can forget the cowboys at the first thanksgiving dinner? sipping scotch, eating biscuits, and in debt. no time for turkey, no time for pie.
and while jimmy smith is not in debt . . . journalist is enjoying turkey, dressing, and pie. no cowboys here, though, and no indians. just baby seal. dressed like a small pirate again.
can never tell when the opportunity may come by to seize an oil tanker for ransom. could use a few million dollars from saudi arabia. would buy an american made pickup truck.
happy thanksgiving to everyone and stay out of the malls on black friday.
and speaking of black friday . . . not even in office yet and already a new holiday. call it change.
what? what, baby seal? not a new black holiday? nothing to do with obama? shopping day? hmmm . . .
and baby seal and jimmy smith are on the way to see gil and hope to be houseguests . . . put the biscuits in the oven. a little whelk would also be useful. journalist will bring a watermelon.
Jimmy and baby seal would be most welcome to put their feet.. uh.. and flippers under my table... Josie says lots of pie is left over, and cheese cake...
And American made pick up truck... Toyota.. right?
Fords and Dodges made in Mexico, Chevys in Canada... eh?
Anyway, I am stuffed to the gills... so to speak... or is that Gil is stuffed.. same, only different.
And looks like the Cowboys dined on Seahawks today...
Gil, ... apologies for making too many points ... just the disjointed ramblings of a senile old man who has trouble expressing himself ... Happy Thanksgiving!
Apologies too for not having emailed individual greetings to each of you as had been intended ... our Comcast Server hasen't worked for more than 46 hours, as of 6:00 am when we left for Chattanooga ... no scotch but good pies, turkey, dressing and iced tea ... premium gas for 1.79!

spam corrodes. should not get spam inside the computer.
now, baseball . . . who is covering the team this year with baby seal no longer beet writing?
After 8 hours and 42 minutes of detailed testing, I find that neither computer computer has any viruses ... but the problem persists and because of their security, ... the outgoing email port must be changed ... they claim to have a one click solution but it's only for Outlook Express under Internet Explorer ... but, they have another url that gives instructions for changing it manually ... only problem is that the it times out and the network connection is lost when you try to go to that url.
Manually changing the port doesn't work either ...
Goodness!! Double Goodness!!
Thanks Boss ... from both of us ...
"awaits an overturned ... " ... tore me up
I finally corrected the problems ... think and hope ... shortly before Midnight
Good morning folks, another beautiful day in the neighborhood.
Bob, there are lots of alternative e-mail providers you can go to for free, I pay zero for AOL and use that account the most even though I also use Comcast high speed internet.
I'll bet Comcast didn't stop the steady influx of SPAM to your account.
Anyway, just thought I would drop by to see if y'all were giving away calenders this year at the Old Barbershop....
Gil, I also use Yahoo and Google ... and did send one or two emails out during this period.
We chose not to so do except in emergencies so as not to inadvertently exacerbate any problems or spread any viruses to others. My thinking was that if we had such viruses, the fact that only Comcast had taken action wasn't reason to assume that it was safe to use the others.
As I may have mentioned, we had also been having some problems that affected our Google "chat/talk" ... our "magic/jack" phone and SKYPE ... just before this happened.
In resolving those problems, I installed several (8) new drivers from one of the private "system/scan" sources ... the drivers worked fine but it raised the possibility they had left something on the computer that was "doing whatever it was that was being done" ... Comcast never said and didn't provide examples of the bogus emails.
However, if changing the port solves the problem, it has been so done ...
Why is it that "country" restaurants can't make gravy worth eatin' ... and yet most folks seem to love it?
How can you botch "Red Eye" gravy? ... goodness ... yet, almost without exception, they make it where it tastes like turpentine ... and that includes the Cracker Barrel.
The same is true of "sawmill" gravy ... granted, good "sawmill" is a little harder to get just right and there are many variations but there's no excuse for making stuff what tastes like paste ... and yet, folks seem to love it!
Unrelated mind trigger ... twenty years ago, I was one of Cracker Barrel's first customers when they opened up a new store in Columbus, OH ... ordered country ham, biscuits and red eye gravy!
They brought out ham, biscuits, and what I think was sawmill gravy ... a good looking piece of ham too ... sugar cured baked!
I told the waitress that I thought there had been some mistake in the order ... for I had asked for "country ham" and "red eye" gravy ... and was expecting fried, salt cured ham like that served at other Cracker Barrels ... and red eye gravy.
She apologized for the mistake ... said the cook was new and probably got out the wrong piece of ham ... and took it back. A few minutes later, she returned ... no gravy ... that same piece of ham ... burned on both sides and salted ...
I smiled and simply said "Thanks Sally" ... no, I never knew her name ... it was just Sally, as in "No Tip Sally"
Actually, I may have left a tip ... can't remember
We took a smoked turkey to my sister's for Thanksgiving ... she too bought a turkey ... made giblet gravy and cornbread dressing ... not as good as Mama's ... needed sage and Mama's special hand ... but very, very good indeed!
It was all good and as per usual I ate too much ...
One thing about Thanksgiving dinners, no matter the quality, it can always be made up in quantity....
As for gravy, well, you know....
I have never been able to get cream chipped beef the way my mom fixed it either. My youngest son is the only person I have ever known who can get it close..
Mama made Chipped Beef on Toast to die for ... we had a different version in the army ... different initials too
I can't make it either ... gave up trying but will occasionally get some of the frozen packages and still enjoy it after a fashion ... but I add lots of pepper
Yes Bob, Pepper can cover a multitude of sins.. Perhaps I should sprinkle myself liberally with the stuff.
Ah did not go to the big game but Ah see that the Yellah Jackets beat the Bulldawgs. Ah told Vince Doolah that statcha would be bad luck. Somebodah called me and told me that that statcha looks moah like Mohtima Snuhd than Vince Doolah.
And one moah thing . . . what is Jim Mahtin trahin to do to Saxbah? Jim is sahin Saxbah is goin to raise taxes and Saxbah is sahin Jim is goin to raise taxes. Sounds lahk taxes ah goin up foah suah.
Is anabodah awah of what maght be happenin with the Braves? Does anabodah know wheah Ah can go foah some news covahahge? Wheah is Babah Seal?
And Ah wish to offah belated Annivusharah greetings to Bob and Cahul.
Ah must go prepah foah Cybuh Mondah. Ah hope to find a new laptop at a verah pleasin price.
A new laptop, TV tray.. right?
And I saw Ted Turner on Meet The Press this morning... All I can say is Ted is still and idiot... A rich and idiot but still and idiot just the same.
Now baseball... Braves decline to offer John Smoltz arbitration. Well, that is no real surprise as no one, including John, knows if he is going to be able to pitch again.
And the Orioles may be making a play for Pie to get Peavy. Doesn't that just take the cake? Never trust anyone willing to do a three way....
Why thank you, thank you ... Miss Rosa Lynn! Nothin' belated about it ... you're just 363 days early!
I missed the game ...
Some may recall my sharing email excerpts from my good friend Charlie ... here's some of the old and some new ...
Friday, June 27, 2008 6:59 PM
How great to hear from you Lewis G.
Bobby, I hate to admit something to you. My granddaughter, Savannah, starts to college this fall at ... oh my goodness ... anywhere but there ...
Yep, GA Tech. She did visit GA but Tech had her heart "all the way." I told her that PawPaw was going to have to be for her 364 days a year, but one day a year was reserved for the Bulldogs. Go dawgs!
I guess if I put up with you and your GA Tech fanaticism ... I'll adjust to having it come from the girl I love better than anything in the world.
---Charlie---
Saturday June 28, 2008 1:47 AM
Goodness Charlie ... how wonderful it is to hear back from you so fast!!
It warms my heart and makes my day ... Carol's too ... to know that Savannah will be getting a good education.
What do people think when you call me Lewis G, Jr ... he himself was a junior ... guess, I'm LG, III ... well, it's a mighty fine compliment, regardless of the number.
Thanks!
Go Jackets!!
Monday, September 22, 2008 5:47 AM
Bobby,
I hate to have to say the following: "Go Jackets!"
Well, you see, the whole situation has changed. Savannah, is now a freshman at her dad's old school, GA Tech.
I guess if it were good enough for him, his sister, his brother, his nephews and nieces to attend, Savannah ought to feel at home.
I guess if Tech were good enough for my "almost kin-folk" Bob McBrayer, I ought to concede that Tech is acceptable.
Even though I have to accept such things, I'm still in my heart a Dawg. How 'bout them dawgs! Now #3 on their way to the national championship in football!
--- Charlie ---
Saturday, November 29, 2008 7:38 PM
Doctor Goodwin,
Just got back from Chattanooga and wanted to wish you a belated happy Thanksgiving ... How 'bout them dawgs! Hope they had a pleasant trip on their way to the national championship in football!
Hope you enjoyed today's game too ... I missed it!
Who won?
Your "almost kin-folk",
Bob
Saturday, November 29, 2008 8:58 PM
Well, you didn't miss a lot. GA Tech came to play but GA forgot to bring their defensive team. The result ... Tech finally, after eight long years, won another game against the Dawgs.
The bad thing for me, my granddaughter was right there in the middle, whooping it up, with all those other GA Tech kids wearing those ugly GA Tech caps.
Bobby, I can't tell you how that hurt her poor lil-ole-PawPaw.
Actually, it's was enough to make a grown man cry!
Truthfully, since she is going to Tech, the loss didn't hurt nearly as bad as the last time the Dawgs lost to Tech, which happened when she was in the 5th grade.
Persistence pays off. I'm confident Tech will probably win again in 2016. So, you dadburn Jackets, enjoy your victory.
Sunday, November 30, 2008 4:57
Carol adds her best wishes and condolences ... 409 rushing yards ... Charlie, 409 yards!!
She said you should actually be proud of Georgia's defense ... we had 472 against Miami the previous game.
I admit that it's hard for us to compete with the Red and Black these days ... but we have our standards and still require that our athletes attend class, regardless of how much money they make.
Admit it Charlie, it takes intelligence to defend against the triple option ...
Daddy loved the Dawgs too ... never understood why ... and he too had a problem with the GA Tech "Rat Caps" ... well, sorta ... he asked me if I could put "To Heck With GA" on mine!
As memory serves, back when I was attending the Trade School, we won all of our games against the dawgs ... part of an 8-0 run, longer than any GA ever had against us ... of course, freshmen didn't play on the Varsity and it was one platoon ... giving the advantage to the team with the smarter players ... and Coach.
Rumor is that the team was inspired to victory today by a freshman coed who told them that her Paw-Paw was watching so they had to play well and make a good impression ... she done good!
The last time I attended a game in Athens was 42 years ago ... we were favored but both teams were nationally ranked ... we parked in a service station at the edge of town and walked ... turned down an offer of $800 for our two tickets ... bad choice ... bad seats ... and we lost!
The boys exceeded expectations this year ... and yet, they could have been 11-1 ... should have been 10-2, methinks.
It's just the beginning Charlie ... 16 of our 22 starters are underclassmen ... we fully expect to win again in 2016 ... establishing a new record for consecutive victories in the series at nine.
Take care, mon ami
Good one Bob. Sorry Ga Tech won't get to play in the ACC championship game. UVA found out too late who their best quarterback is.
Hokie Hokie Hokie Hi.....
Well Gil, while I was pulling for UVa, we had our shot at both Va teams ... wudda, cudda, shudda
This just in from Charlie ...
I'm proud of all the dawgs have accomplished this year.
There has never been a Georgia team to start the year ranked #1 in the nation, and then finish the year as #2 in Georgia (I'm glad they didn't play Kennesaw State.)
Now that's showing how one can be truly flexible. Tech hasn't ever done that, that's for sure!
You guys will never accomplish all the dawgs have accomplished, even without trying.
Ah think it is erah how that Jackass boah was writin about William H Sewahd, a formah Secretarah of State, and now Hillarah is bein appointed Secretarah of State by Barack Obama. That is just erah. This is a powahful blog with powahful bloggahs and often theah ah erah occuhrences heah. Havin Hillarah as Secretarah of State will alsa be erah and a little scarah, too.
Ah see wheah Ronnah Gant is goin to be on the Hall of Fame ballot. Good! Let's hope that's as close as the boah comes to the Hall of Fame. Ah figuah Dale Murpha ought to be theah befoah anahbodah else on the Braves Ah can think of not named Chippah Jones.
Of coahse, some pitchas maght make it, too. Mad Dog comes to mahnd. Othah than that, onlah Ol' Bobba Cox comes to mahnd and Bobba will nevah make it because of his unseemlah habit of pickin his nose.
Imagine what theah would have to put in the Bobba Cox displah theaH! Gross! Ah would not want to lean against anah Bobba Cox displah ahtems lahk his locka. Suah to come awah with some boogahs on me.
One thing about Hillary as Secretary of State, she fits the bill (no pun intended) of being an unattractive Democrate. Maybe not so much as Madlin Albright or Janet Reno but you won't have to worry about the rumor of her being picked for her looks....
Well, with the stock market going back down today, will they blame Obama for it as much as they credited him for the positive bounce last week?
Jimma had a theorah about Secretarahs of State - theah must be watched verah cahfullah. Cyhus Vance was Jimma's Secretarah of State and Cyhus quit on Jimma when Jimma decided to ohdah a hostage rescue mission. Cyhus just up and left Jimma. Of coahse, that rescue mission failed misahablah. Cyhus just got lucka.
Jimma alwahs regretted pickin Cyhus. Theah is a storah about how Cyhus got the job.
Jimma did not want a Secratarah of State with facial haih. That is the main reason he picked a clean cut boah like Cyhus Vance.
Ah do not know if facial haih is a no-no foah Barack Obama's choice but Madeline Albraght had heh shah of facial haih and Ah understand that Hillarah has a little moustache under all that makeup. So theah is a precedent foah hairah ladah Secretarahs of State.
Hey, I can post again!!! How about that!!!
Hope everyone had a good turkey day!!
I just received a strange email from a old friend ... "... I can't sign in again!!! Has anyone else mentioned it being a problem???
EDIT, just went to prove I couldn't sign in today, and I am signed in"!!!
Sounds like a personal problem to me ... poor boy must have been graduated summa cum laude from somewhere ... maybe that school in Athens ...
During the second or third week of basic training, we had an introductory session on the use of the gas mask ... the first hour of which was devoted to putting the thing on ... a seven step process ... by the numbers.
While doing things by the numbers is of value, especially with complex multistep processes, ... the third time through, I disregarded the instructor and just put it on ... big mistake ... he stopped the class with ... "Hey, Einstein, how many college degrees do you have?"
Wither the Boss????
Hi Lincoln Man ... was just talking about you!
Behigan, glad to have ya bloggin with us again. Ah know ya tend to be consuhvative and ya know Ah am mahied to a libuhl weenah but Ah hope we can be friends.
Ah see that Mike Hampton is goin to Houston. It won't be long until we ah readin, "Houston, we have a problem." Probablah a tohn rotatuh cuff oh a pulled groin oh a elbah injurah.
That boah is gonna explode somedah.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Cox Newspapers announced plans to shut its Washington, D.C., office in April.
The Washington bureau was established in 1974—the same year that Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency in disgrace. The bureau has provided national and international news to 17 Cox newspapers around the country. The closure will affect about two dozen newspaper staff members, most of whom will be offered severance packages.
Washington bureau chief Andy Alexander said the moves come after Cox announced earlier this year that it would seek to sell its newspapers in Texas, North Carolina and Colorado.
He said selling those papers created less need for the Washington office, which supplements work done by regional reporters for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Dayton Daily News.
Five foreign bureaus also will be closed.

Well, we've traded for Javier Vasquez. Thoughts?
Going to have to wait a bit on that one Matthew, We likely won't know for a couple of years. A bit like the trade for Texieria.

Port St. Lucie woman says ex-boyfriend snatched wig, rode away on bike
staff report
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
PORT ST. LUCIE — A 20-year-old woman told police the wig she was wearing got snatched by an ex-boyfriend, who pedaled away on a bicycle, according to a report released Monday.
The victim said she left a party and was walking east on Southeast Voltair Terrace about 3 a.m. Friday when her ex-boyfriend came up on a bicycle.
She said he started arguing and yanked off a black wig that was sewn to her natural blond hair. The ex-boyfriend reportedly slapped her after she began chasing him.
Investigators found the victim's hair in "disorder." She said she and the alleged wig-snatcher lived together for eight months. She knew his first name, but apparently recalled only the first letter of his last name.
The ex-boyfriend called the victim's cell phone while an officer was there. Speaking to an officer via the cell phone, he admitted pulling the wig off and leaving when the victim started crying and said she was calling authorities.
The ex-boyfriend hung up after police asked for his last name. Investigators continue to try to identify the alleged wig-puller.

Man allegedly assaults girlfriend with burger
VERO BEACH, Fla. — A Vero Beach man faces a domestic violence charge after authorities said he assaulted his girlfriend with a cheeseburger. An Indian River County Sheriff's Office arrest report said a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend got into an argument as they sat in a car in front of their home.
The report said the man would not let the woman out of the vehicle, so she threw his drink out of the car. In response, the man allegedly grabbed her arm and smashed the cheeseburger into her face. The pair got out of the car, and authorities say the man again took the McDonald's sandwich and put it on her face.

Ha! The jokes on you Bob! I didn't go to college!!! Or Highschool. I just learnt to read from serial boxes and teevee...
JJS, about that grammy news with Lil Wayne getting more grammy nods than Coldplay....I don't know how hep you are to today's music(I ain't to hep to it much any more) but you might even like Coldplay's ballads...whereas Lil Wayne might make you stick sharp objects in your ears!
Grammys, Oscars, Pulitzer prizes = Jokes.
"The jokes on you Bob! I didn't go to college!!! Or Highschool. I just learnt to read from serial boxes and teevee" ...

Ah was class valadictohian. Not manah people know that. The boah that was salutatohian was prettah shahp, too, and he ended up with a hahdwah stoah in Amehicus.
Not manah people know that Ah tuhned down Jimma when he fuhst pohposed mahahge. Ah thought he would nevah amount to much. All he wanted to do was hammah.
Bob, going to Athens, graduating summa something, loudly...
I hope I don't look like less of a person for not being formerly edumakated...
Berigan, how you look has little to do with your formal education ... of course, behind all that hair, one can't really tell but you might be a handsome, formally well educated, patron of the arts ... we wouldn't hold that against you neither.
Be all you can be ... and if all you can be is what you is ... you've bested Andruw and Frenchy!
I wasn't graduated cum laude ... indeed, I too was never graduated ... Daddy instilled the notion that "a fool and his money are soon parted" ...
We all have out views on the economy ... the Braves evidently have one one too ...
87-76 ... that's AJ Burnett ... an average of 13-12 ... and, that's evidently worth $16 million a year for 4 or 5 years.
87-76 ... that's your ace? Scary ... if your team was made up of such aces, your chances of making the playoffs are slim ... only the Dodgers would have made the playoffs in 2008 with such a record ...
And real quality pitcher Vazquez brings his 127-129 baggage to the club!!!
Of course, aces don't pitch nine innings any more ... those 13 victories involve setup men and closers too ...
I wonder what the 10 best healthy but "unproven" arms would cost?
The Marlins might know ... or maybe the Rays.
Give them each 10 year contracts ... $1 million a year, plus $1 million in any year they remain active with the organization (pitch at any level)... plus $250,000 for each victory with the big club.
"Healthy" so they can be insured ...
Yes, I'd pay an extra dollar to see Koufax pitch again ... Satchel, Diz, Nolan or Greg in their prime.
The "salaries" paid to players make no sense ... minimum + marginal contribution value + celebrity value added.
It's a team game and fans, regardless of what Shaun's experts say, pay for excitement and victories ... not celebrities. We make our own heroes/celebrities ... them what are exciting and them what win.
Of course we want to see our heroes ... those what have excited us and given us our magic moments ... the may be exceptions but most of those were either home grown or came to us early in their careers ... "our boys" ... Dusty Baker, Dale Murphy, Bob Horner, the Jones' boys ... Larry and Andruw, Rafael Furcal, Felix Millan, David Justice, Javy Lopez, Ralph Garr, Phil Niekro, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Mark Wohlers ... and Hank Aaron too.
Maybe the Designated Hitter is at the heart of our economic woes ... but it's Free Agency what killed Cock Robin and destroyed the game.
That and idiots what trade away the store to rent players ...
... just my singular opine

Another Wren Gem ... the Braves have signed David Ross to a two-year deal believed to be worth $3 million.
Ross has hit .222 in 431 career games ... after a dismal 2007 season in which he hit but .203 while striking out 30% of the time, Dave rebounded last season when he hit .225 with 3 homeruns while his strikeouts dropped to 27.5%.
Now 31, I'm sure that David is a real quality catcher who's always wanted to play for the Braves ... like most Bainbridge boys who grew up during the streak.
I'll have to give it to Frank ... he knew all along he could get Georgian David Ross for $3 million ... that's why he was willing to trade Pena and Salty, methinks.

However, it does prompt me to add Steve Avery, Mark Lemke, Jeff Blauser, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton, and Kevin Millwood to my earlier list ...
The picture is getting clearer ...
wish my stopped up head was ...
The thrill of victory...and the agony of defeat ... jimmy always says that one should not trifle with de feet.
What was your reaction to "the agony of defeat" when you first saw it ... remember?
My reaction was simply ... "A$sClown"! ...
Indeed!
I thought he was dead ...
Even more remarkable than Furman Bisher's great story, and storied career, are the insults, the demeaning, personal attacks and the ignorant and uncivilized demands for his immediate retirement by numerous readers ... many of whom are regulars on some of the 'overrated' sites ... Unbelievable! ...
A great man once said ... "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." ...
Here Here!!
Boss, I made the same observation and was tempted to say as much when I posted a comment to Furman's Blog a few minutes ago.
It's amazing how things get around ... Polonius told Laertes ... he told me and MLK gets credit!
Ordinary words remain but ordinary ... until spoken by extraordinary people ...
Bah Humbug!!
Classic SJA... Simply classic...

I am bare impressed with the article I have just read. I wish the writer of www.theoldbarbershop.com can continue to provide so much practical information and unforgettable experience to www.theoldbarbershop.com readers. There is not much to say except the following universal truth: A straight line can be drawn from the Tower of Babylon to UniCode. I will be back.
