How Good A Golfer Is Atlanta Braves Ace John Smoltz? ...

Your golf buddy Tiger Woods has referred to you as his "personal ATM." Is that typical smack talk from him? Smoltz: Oh, yeah, He's up there with the likes of Larry Byrd and Michael Jordan when it comes to the way he dishes it out. [Laughs]But, yeah, it's both apropos and funny. How many strokes does he give you? Smoltz: Anywhere from two to three a side... Whoa, that's all? Smoltz: For me, when I'm playing the way I want to be playing, which is rare with him, that's a fair match. But, to borrow a baseball term, I have not had a good bullpen down the stretch with him. It's all about how you finish, and he's the ultimate closer. And a pretty good starter, too. You've been both a starting pitcher and a closer, which require two very different mentalities. Which are you as a golfer? Smoltz: In a regular round, I try to make any kind of shot, no matter the risk involved. When I play in an official tournament, I'm a lot more conservative, a lot more of a starter. The hardest part is containing the beast in me that wants to pull off the shot. Any plans to trade professional baseball for professional golf? Smoltz: I have a couple of goals. One would be to make a cut, one cut, on the PGA Tour, and then to play on the Champions Tour. But I want to see if I can do some of the things that baseball has prepared me to do. I want to test my mental toughness at that level. --by Steve Beslow ASSISTANT EDITOR, GOLF MAGAZINE

journalist returned earlier than expected from the convention. jimmy smith thinks the incident was overplayed in the media. what is an ear doing there anyway? makes it hard to give a proper haircut. anyway, jimmy smith will be doing some remedial study at barber college for the next few weeks. must keep the certification in hand if appearing on this haircut and baseball and other subjects blog.

and now, the comb-over. how can hair over the ear be stretched to the point that it covers the entire top surface of the head? ear to ear, so to speak. jimmy smith will be looking into this at barber college.

and don't let anybody tell you that jimmy smith and baby seal are home early for any reason other than jimmy smith and baby seal wanted to beat the snow storm. baby seal, especially.

and now, dead giraffes. it is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since the passing of 23-year old betunia giraffe.

now, baseball . . . mike lum.

bRakiNg newS! Black Japanese watermelon sold at record price

Premium black watermelon auctioned in Japan for a record $6,100

TOKYO (AP) -- A jumbo black watermelon auctioned in Japan on Friday fetched a record $6,100, making it one of the most expensive watermelons ever sold in the country.
In a society where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts, the watermelon's hefty price tag followed another jaw-dropping auction last month, when a pair of "Yubari" cantaloupe melons sold for a record $23,500.

Wow! Good luck, Jimmy & Baby Seal. I know with all your contacts in Cordele you will be a great success.

Crushing loss by the Braves tonight. I am so discouraged right now. They are a better team than this. Don't know who to be angriest with: Kelly for dropping the ball, Acosta for giving up the runs, Francoeur for leaving all those men on base?

Maybe the wierdest thing about last night was paying $4.50 for a bottle of water ... well, $12 for a small sandwich and chips was wierd too ... and the five girls sitting in front of us, the oldest of whom might have been 15, being supplied with beer after beer by some urban cowboy in his late twenties ... until the 7th inning when security took them all away ... that was wierd too ... as was the "can you believe somebody ratted on him?" reaction from the lady sitting on our row.

However, the game had its momments too ... trying for a circus catch; turning a harmless single into triple that resulted in a run in the first ... The fleet footed McCann leading off an inning off with a bunt that resulted in an out... Blanco's failed sucicide squeeze attempt on a 2-0 count ... Escobar running on contact in stead of tagging up from third when Frenchy hit the line drive to the outfield ... then as a result, being thrown out at the plate by 30 feet with the bases loaded ... Chipper stood at second for over two minutes; in anger and disbelief, methinks.

Hot and humid night ... having having the pitcher run into the third out at second on a delayed steal attempt after the lead runner had successfully stolen third ... with Yunel at the plate ... and Kelly's error.

The handling of the pitchers ... two out in the 10th and a fast man not being able to score from second on a base hit ... and, of course, Jeff loves to try to pull the ball with the bases loaded in a close game and the bases loaded ... twice last night ... and seems like six times in the past 5 days ... 0 fer 6 with 2 DPs, methinks.

It's a team game and 'twas a team loss ... but, take there were a lot of reasons ... you can take your pick ... I personally vote for the Manager and his 3rd base coach ... but, disappointing ain't the word.

That's another one that we shoudda won but didn't ... hopefully, tonight will provide a different result.

I get to go to the games maybe once a year ... it's always fun, regardless of the outcome ... but, it would have been funner had we won.

I'm not sure what I expected but whatever it was; it wasn't ... that is to say, things didn't go as expected ... or at least as hoped.

I tried to find out what went wrong last night but was told that Bobby didn't want to talk about it ... figured he was still talking about his long time "strength and conditioning coach" ... but the buzz was about Soriano ... and nobody really didn't want to talk about that either, methinks.

It's easy to blame Kelly or Yunel ... and a lot of folks did ... but, like I said, they were in good company.

I thought Reyes piched rather well tonight ... but, with the exception of Chipper's homer, there was no hint of offence ... so when we loaded the bases, tied 2-2 ... Bobby let Jo Jo hit for himself ... though "hit" is a misnomer as he's yet to have one.

Last night was one we shudda won and didn' ... while tonight was one we shudda lost and did ... fair's fair!

Of course, Big Brown pulled a Soriano too!

Worse thing about the weekend is that the recipe I got for Molasses Puff Candy isn't to die for ... though Carol isn't so sure that eating it won't kill you!

It's been a privilege to share perspectives with many good baseball fans over the years ... some closely connected with the sport ... most reasonably knowledgeable ... some without a clue.

As we left last night's game, it was truly uplifting to be greeted by an energetic old black fellow ... a bit younger than me, I'd guess ... with a big smile on his face ... who shook my hand as he exclaimed "we'll get 'em tomorrow!"

It was the highlight of my two days at "The Ted" ... that and seeing Carol enjoy it so much!

One thing that struck me was the extent of the orchestration ... like the live TV shows I attended 50 years ago with cue cards telling the audience when to laugh and applaud ... frequently, the screen would show ... MAKE NOISE ... and like the sheep we were, we did, right on cue.

Somehow, it was better, back when it was spontaneous ... of course, there were a few embarrassing times back then when I was the only one cheering or applauding.

Boss, I'm tired ... but it was indeed worthwhile ... got a watermelon, some cantaloupe, sorghum syrup and Lady Peas as a bonus.

a small fortune in melons . . .

and now, when will bobby cox gain control of this team? c'mon, kid.

and baseball injuries are the hardest to explain. and mccann and chipper sitting out the same game makes for no offense. funny how it works out that way.

and, in oakland, joey devine has an injured elbow. soon, blayne boyer will join devine as a pitcher misused by the current manager of the atlanta braves.

and little jeff francoeur is being taken advantage of by these major league pitchers. needs a session with mccann's daddy. patience. patience may equal production.

Bob, I am sorry the Braves didn't win at least one game for you guys! :( But, it sounds like you and Carol were able to have some fun, more than one can watching them lose on TV! That heat, how'd you stand it??? I didn't go out much the last few days....

Berigen ... standin' the heat is an old trick learned from the Indians ... that is to say, let others do it ... only Yankees standin the heat ... we sit in the shade.

It was hot ... and muggy ... a little breeze on Friday night ... actually a few minutes of light rain too.
