What a delightful and refreshing invitation ... I'll trust you with the cut of the hair and if you will, a 3.5 on the beard.

As I was sitting here waiting my turn and reading about how Roger Clemens has morphed himself from Super Hero to dastardly villain, I was somehow reminded of how my friend Robert Andersen changed his form.

Following college where he starred in baseball, football and track, Bob managed his family's small upper midwestern grain and feed store ... where he eked out a living and cheered his Twins and Vikings, even when they lost ... it was a mediocre existence to some, but he was happy in his hometown ... with food on the table and friends galore.

That is, until one fateful day while visiting a nearby farm, he was buried alive in a silo accident ... barely escaping with his life, he was permanently disabled ... both legs crushed from the waist down.

Medical expenses were higher than high and he lost his business ... with little left but his home and a small disability income from insurance.

Yes, this 45 year old was also tragically transformed, but not by his own doing ... there is a difference ... and it does make a difference, methinks.

Now why in the world would some nut impose such a story on a fine new blog like "The Old Barbershop"? I guess it's stupid to so do while still in the barber's chair ... but then that's what nuts are, ... at least this one, methinks.

Well, it's just my singular opine but Robert Andersen was a good man and I thought it was a good story.

And now, as Mr. Harvey might say, for the rest of the story …

Robert Andersen was in the hospital for nine months, in therapy longer than that … he, being of good stock, tried hard but when the day was over he was still totally disabled … wheelchair bound … a defeated man … depressed, disconsolate … and when he did finally return home; though his family cared and provided for him as best they could, each day was the same … he and his wheelchair never left the house, save trips to the hospital for checkups. Bob remained defeated, depressed, disconsolate … but it was different too, like big bad John … another day older … “what can I do, sell insurance?” he asked himself … and there he sat.

No, I’m no Paul Harvey nor Aesop neither … and this story has no fancy surprise ending or hidden moral … but, his transformation … maybe that’s something worth thinking about, methinks.

Well, this is a nice new shop … right friendly place and the haircut looks pretty good but sja has already nicked me twice while trying to trim my beard … so I’d best finish as quickly as possible.

Bob didn’t want any or have many visitors … a couple of years passed and there was a knock on the door one day … an old friend, to whom he was indebted … with BBQ and beer … and so they sat listening to music and talking about old times … and when the beer was gone, they got some more … his friend then suddenly switched the topic from the Vikings to “So Bob, what are you going to be doing for the rest of your life?” … Bob obviously didn’t have an answer … but, that question really hit home … “for the rest of your life?” … his life was over … and after two beers in stunned and absolute silence, he was only able to offer up two questions in response … “What could I possibly do? Were you me, what would you do?

I first met Robert Andersen several years later … he could then “walk” with braces and he was accepting his second consecutive “Man of the Year” award from the company for which we both worked … his third in four years … and not to be his last! Yes, he could sell insurance … and that he did!!

That visiting friend was also associated with the company and it was he who had sold Bob his life and disability income insurance policies … for which Bob was truly indebted … maybe the only things in which he had continued to believe during those dark days of despair, other than family, God, … and of course, the Vikings and Twins, even when they lost.

Bob Andersen, always with a friendly smile, … told folks “selling life and disability income insurance is easy when you believe in it as I do … especially when you’re a walking testimonial!” Disabled though he was ... he wasn't ... he led a full and active life; remaining a top agent for several more years ... the company continued his disability benefits and waived his premiums for life.

So now you know, … the rest of the story, that is …

Roger Clemens and Bob Andersen … both undergoing what might be described as transformation … both walking testimonials … there is a difference ... and it makes a difference, methinks.

Tip … what tip?!! Well, if you insist … here’s one Polonius offered the sister of young Laertes when she asked for one … “don’t get into that habit!

A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in our country.

Well, the answer is quite simple, methinks ... nobody bothered to check the oil.

Like me with my old car, we just didn't know we were getting low ... the reason methinks, is purely geographical. Our Oil is located in Alaska, California, Florida, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and of course Texas.

Unfortunately, our dipsticks are all located in Washington, DC!!!

The regulars all know I’m a big baseball fan … my Atlanta Braves’ jersey probably made the rest of y’all suspect as much … and, contrary to rampant rumors, I’m not wearing the Braves’ cap just to hide my most recent haircut.

It’s been a rough April for the Braves but I just looked at the standings and if we lose today, we’ll be tied with the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians … so I figure we’re in pretty good company. However, if we win, we’ll be tied with Kansas City … which ain’t so good.

Yes, it’s been a rough April … the starting pitching has been adequate … better than that, I guess … they’ve given us a chance to win most of the time, but we’ve yet to win a one run game … losing eight … and today’s game is tied at one as we go to the seventh inning stretch.

Back during Spring Training, I thought and said that the starting rotation should be … (1) Tim Hudson, (2) Jair Jurrjens, (3) John Smoltz, (4) Mike Hampton and (5) Tom Glavine … with a possible sixth starter … Jo Jo Reyes or Buddy Carlyle … and that Soriano would close with Moylan and Acosta setting things up.

Well, it’s the end of April and Hampton has yet to appear in a game; scratched and placed on the DL just minutes before his first scheduled start.

Glavine has already spent time on the DL and has yet to win a game … indeed, the Braves are 0-4 in the games he’s started. Smoltz is now on the DL while Hudson started the season well but has been erratic in his last four, and he too may have physical problems.

Only young Jurrjens has been spared … he’s pitched well, very well indeed … I picked him as our number two starter and there he be, behind Hudson. He pitched today … no decision, giving up two hits and one run in seven innings.

Lest we forget, Soriano pitched in but four games before going on the DL … Moylan seven … and there both remain, with Peter’s prospects for a 2008 return currently in doubt.

Well, my friend Jere told me to “cheer up, things could be worse” … I did … and he was right, things just got worse … earlier today, Hampton appears to have reinjured his pectoral muscle … goodness! I still think he’ll return and do well … but, that’s a bummer and has to be affecting him above the neck, if not below.

Unbelievable, but not totally unexpected … back during Spring Training I told you boys “bringing back Tom Glavine, who will soon be 42, for $8 million was fraught with peril … it’s a lot of money to pay a 42 year old pitcher. I read somewhere that the Braves jumped at the chance to get Tommy for $8 million … I don’t know what your expectations are for $8 million … but mine are greater than what I feel I can reasonably expect from him in 2008”.

Regarding Smoltz, I said … “well, I’ve yet to fully buy into the notion that John’s approach to Spring Training is predicated on positives … but he is a competitor and it’s too early to sell him short.

Hopefully, Tommy will be a pleasant surprise and serve as the positive contagion John needs to have a good year … but, he is just a year younger than Glavine and his durability, given his history and 2007 problems, is a concern”.

SJA remembers me telling you that … so don’t interrupt, I’m on a role … I also said of Hampton … ”While everyone wishes Mike well and hopes for the best, that the Braves are placing such hopes on someone who hasn’t pitched in two years is also a concern” … and about Soriano, “he has yet to pitch during Spring Training, … Rafael doesn’t seem worried about his current soreness which is being attributed to Spring Training irritation following offseason inactivity”.

Late this afternoon, John Smoltz said … "I'm coming back as a reliever first and then we'll see what happens" … indeed, we will see … maybe that’s a good thing.

And last but not least, another unbelievable, but not totally unexpected result … Braves lose yet another one run game … 2-3 in twelve, after taking the lead in the top of the inning … well, I’ll guarantee you that they won’t lose tomorrow … it’s an off day.

Don’t get discouraged … I’m not … it’s early yet and they have the talent … and I have it on good authority that the Braves will go to the World Series this year!!

However, unless things get turned around, methinks Frank Wren’s going to be on the hook for a lot of tickets.

Go Braves!
